There was considerable increase in electricity tariff applicable to industrial consumers in the various states of the country during 1996-97 and 1997-98.
Even agricultural electricity tariff was hiked in the case of two states during the same period. The KEB increased the tariff by a 200 per cent, from 7.65 paise per unit to 22.96 paise during 1996-97 to 1997-98 for the agricultural users.
The APSEB revised the tariff by 37 per cent in August 1996. The KEB hiked the electricity tariff by 31 per cent in July 1996, KSEB by 25.52 per cent and the HPSEB by 27 per cent in February 1997. The cost of industrial production depends on many factors, and a hike in electricity tariff invariably pushes the cost up.
