
CHANDIGARH, June 7: Fighter A8217; XI were crowned the champions of the second Chandigarh League cricket tournament after beating Pace XI by three wickets in the final here at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium today.
After Pace XI scored 195 for 8 in the allotted 40 overs, Fighter A8217; owed it to a gritty 101 run fifth wicket partnership between man of the match Navdeep Singh and Navneet Thapar. By the time the two were dismissed, they had placed their side on threshold of a win.
Though they still needed 54 runs off the last 60 balls, Arun Tuli saw to it that Fighter A8217; won with seven balls to spare.
Earlier, Pace XI were helped by a strokeful knock of 61 by the talented southpaw Yuvraj Singh. He hammered the bowling to all possible parts of the park, hitting eight fours and one six.
He was also involved in a 98 run stand with Harjeet Bajwa 37 and resisted Fighter A8217; left arm spinner Arun Sharma 4 for 31.
Fighter A8217; started on the wrong foot as they lost four quick wickets but Navdeep 57- nine fours and Navneet 46- five fours were not to be detterred by these setbacks.
Former Test players Kapil Dev, Yograj Singh and Chetan Sharma were honoured on the occasion. The Punjab Governor Lt Gen Retd B K N Chibber announced a grant of Rs two lakhs to UT Cricket Association.
Yuvraj Singh was the best all rounder, Arun Tuli best batsman, Rahul Panta best bowler and Jaswant Rai best fielder of the tourney.
