I share Tavleen Singh’s views on the hypocrisy shown by the Left in matters ranging from economic affairs to institutions (‘The Saraansh of Anupam Kher’s exit’, October 17), but I don’t feel that advocation of Marxist ideology is comparable to that of RSS ideology. Broadly, Marxist concepts which the Left tends to follow are economic in nature and in contemporary times, may at best amount to economic xenophobia (as was seen during the recent Planning Commission controversy, which also came under the purview of hypocrisy). But traditionally, RSS ideas tend to relate more to religious and dogmatic paradigms which, at times, can present the worst forms of divisiveness within the country.

Tavleen Singh’s support for the UPA Government is refreshing. At last she has got over her propensity to take potshots at Sonia and Manmohan. And her criticism of the Left is fully justified. They seem to miss no chance to needle the UPA Government and want to run it by remote control without having to own responsibility for the consequences of their swashbuckling. However, I am unable to understand Tavleen’s objection to Manmohan’s breakfast meetings with Harkishen Singh Surjeet. What better way to deal with a problem child?

By forcing the Union Government to remove Kher, the CPI(M) has exposed the destabilising influence of the Left in affairs of governance. Be it FDI or foreign consultants, the Leftist approach has little to do with public well-being, as it is interested more in using political power without the corresponding responsibility. Is it not ironical that the policies of the Manmohan Singh Government the CPI(M) considers anti-people become pro-people when practised in West Bengal?

The way the Government is behaving with film personalities at the helm of high posts, like Kher, must be condemned by one and all, especially film personalities. They must unite and refuse to accept such posts.

Thank you for your excellent coverage on the success story of two outstanding lady defence officers, Lt Gen Punita Arora and Air Marshal Padma Bandopadhyay (‘Stars & Stripes’, October 17). Both the lady officers have proved that the defence services is a very viable career even for women. It offers a quality of life better than any other service.
