FMCG giant Hindustan Lever Limited (HLL) will now be led by a foreigner for the first time since Stephan Turner handled the reins when HLL was set up in the 1950s. Laying rest to speculation, the Unilever subsidiary on Friday announced the appointment of Douglas Baillie as HLL CEO and MD.
Harish Manwani, president of Unilever (Asia & Africa), will continue as non-executive chairman of HLL. Baillie, an old Unilever hand and currently group vice-president of Africa, Middle East and Turkey (AMET), will also look after Unilever’s business in South Asia as group v-p with responsibilities in the region which also includes Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
He will take charge from March 1, 2006.
