
NAGPUR, OCT 15: Former Vice Chancellor of Nagpur University Dr Bhalchandra B Chopne was yesterday summoned at the Sitabuldi police station to enable the police establish some fresh information gathered in the bogus degree, marklists and marks scam that hit the university during his tenure.
According to sources, Chopne arrived at the police station on Thursday morning but could not be questioned by the police as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) Sanjay Kumar, who is heading the special investigation team (SIT), was preoccupied with a crime conference.
Meanwhile, the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class P R Sadaar, rejected the bail plea of Dilip P Vaidya, Principal of Ramdeobaba Kamla Nehru College of Engineering (RKNEC), after hearing either parties on Thursday.
Vaidya was arrested on October 11 in connection with the seizure of 49,000 blank, printed and pre-signed marklists of not only engineering courses but also some other courses like B.Ed and LL.B, from the office of RKNEC which waslooking after the spot-valuation of engineering exams held in 1997-98.
He was unable to provide any convincing explanation to the recovery of such large quantity of blank and pre-signed marklists and hence was taken into custody, police said. He was remanded to police custody till October 14.However, Vaidya complained of chest pain and had to be removed to the ICU of Government Medical College. In between, his police custody remand was converted by the court to that of judicial custody, sources said. He has since been under treatment at the GMC.
