
The number of people affected by enteric disease has reached around 230 in ward 101 in south Kolkata. And the numbers may increase further 8212; the affected area in ward 101 is large and includes Rabindra Palli and Purba Phulbagan.
An official of the health camp set up in the area said: 8220;We have registered some 230 people who are suffering from enteric disease. Although only a few of them are undergoing treatment at the local hospitals, we are ensuring that the others follow the preventive measures8221;.
The outbreak occurred due to water contamination, caused by a breach in a drinking water pipeline. The KMC health officials, however, provided different figures. 8220;Around 25 patients have registered in the KMC health camp today. Apart from this, we are not aware of other cases of enteric disease,8221; said Debdwaipayan Chattopadhaya, Chief Medical Health Officer, KMC.
To bring the situation under control, the KMC has sent four health teams to survey the area. Chandana Ghosh Dastidar, local councillor, said: 8220;We have started the chlorination process. Water sample has been collected from 12 more spots. We are waiting for the report. Since the leakage remained undetected for three days, the contamination has spread to a large area.8221;
