CHANDIGARH, Aug 13: The shopkeepers of Sector 39 today downed their shutters in protest against the pick and choose policy of the Enforcement staff of Municipal Corporation during the removal of encroachments from the corridor. The Enforcement staff visited the Sector 39 market exclusively at around 12 and took away their wares without even bothering to visit other adjoining markerts where cases of encroachment are in abundance.

A delegation of shopkeepers met the area councillor and Senior Deputy Mayor Kanhya Lal Sharma and brought it to his notice. Sharma assured the delegation that he would soon meet Municipal Commissioner M.P. Singh to resolve the matter. The president of Market Welfare Association Daya Prakash Gupta said the corporation instead of undertaking development work was busy in harassing businessmen on flimsy grounds.

He pointed out that the market has not been provided even basic amenities. Even after four years of the market coming up, the market has so far not been provided running taps for drinking water, said Ajay Kumar Tuli.
