PANCHKULA, Sept 22: The local police here challaned 83 persons on September 19, 20 and 21, according to information released by the police here today.

In the light vehicle category, 34 were challaned for driving without helmets, three vehicles were impounded for driving without documents, six for being without driving licences, two for being without registration certificates, five for driving without pollution certificates and one for not having insurance documents.

In the heavy vehicle category, only three were challaned for driving without registration certificates and driving licences.

While three vehicles were challaned on Monday, the figures went up on Tuesday, with 26 challans, which included 13 for driving without helmets, four without driving licences, one without registration certificate, five without pollution certificates and one without insurance. In the heavy vehicle category, two were challaned for driving without licence and registration certificate.

Mishap figures released
The local police has released accident figures for the past three years ending August 31, 1999.

On the National Highway 22 Zirakpur-Panchkula border to Kalka-Parwanoo border, 23 fatal and 54 non-fatal accidents were reported in 1997, 34fatal and 59 non-fatal in 1998 and 15 fatal and 46 non-fatal were reported till August 31, 1999.

In Panchkula township, 12 fatal and 56 non-fatal accidents were reported in 1997, 20 fatal and 57 non-fatal in 1998 and 10 fatal and 35 non-fatal were reported till August 31 this year.

In other parts of the district, in the years 1997, 1998 and till August 1999, 43 fatal and 71 non-fatal, 28 fatal and 41 non-fatal and 25 fatal and 46 non-fatal were reported, respectively.

The total number of accidents in Panchkula district include 78 fatal 181 non-fatal, 82 fatal and 157 non-fatal and 50 fatal and 127 non-fatal in 1997, 1998 and 1999, respectively.
