The Election Commission today tentatively initiated the process of holding early Lok Sabha elections anytime between March-end and April by trying to remove roadblocks posed by inadequate availability of teachers and revision of electoral rolls.

It was obvious the EC is not averse to the advancing of the general elections or tying it up with the Assembly polls in some states when the state Chief Election Officials CEOs were instructed to enlist the services of alternative polling staff from non-teaching professions.

In another pointer to the poll preparations afoot, the EC also directed the CEOs to complete the revision of electoral rolls and its final publication by February-end.

Chief Election Commissioner J.M. Lyngdoh, who is to retire on February 6, asked the CEOs to ensure that each and every bogus voter8217;s name is removed from the rolls by bringing transparency through the gram sabhas.

The state officials have been asked to procure adequate number of EVMs for use in the Lok Sabha and train the officials as well. A centralised information office to disseminate poll-related information to voters would also be set up after the filing of nomination papers.

Meanwhile, a delegation of Opposition parties from Andhra Pradesh today alleged prevalence of largescale bogus voters and urged the EC to ensure that the electoral rolls8217; verification is foolproof before the poll process to the state Assembly begins. A delegation of Congress, CPIM, CPI, Telangana Rashtra Samithi and AIMIM Majlis met the three-member Commission.
