Asked by the Supreme Court to censor or certify political ads before telecast, the Election Commission today empowered Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of all states and Union Territories to form a committee to do the monitor’s job during the elections.

In the guidelines framed by the EC, the CEO, Delhi, was directed to constitute a three-member panel to deal with applications of registered political parties, groups and organisations who have headquarters in National Capital Territory of Delhi.

The three-member Delhi committee will be chaired by the Joint CEO and will have as members a returning officer of any LS constituency in Delhi and an expert Class-I officer from the I&B Ministry.

Delhi CEO Arun Goyal will name the members, who will have to start functioning from tomorrow as directed by the SC. The BJP and the Congress have already submitted their ads for vetting by the newly-formed committee.

The Returning Officer of each committee has been designated to receive the applications for ads to be certified by the EC. The Commission has also set up panels, chaired by CEOs, to redress grievances of the political parties/candidates who will come to get their ads certified.
