NEW DELHI, August 30: The Vasant Kunj police have arrested the driver of the Tata Sumo, which knocked two policemen in the area on Friday night, killing one of them on the spot.

The driver has been identified as Razi John, 30, a resident of Gupta farmhouse in the Mall Road area of Kishangarh. He has reportedly told the police that he was speeding and could not apply his brakes in time to avoid the scooter on which constable Kailash Tripathi and head constable Naresh were travelling. He fled the spot fearing that he would be handed over to the police by the several bystanders in the vicinity.

The policemen were returning from duty when they they were knocked down near Sahara restaurant in the area. Tripathi died on the spot and Naresh suffered serious head injuries. The valuables, money and service revolvers of the victims were found intact. Though the Tata Sumo driver fled the spot, some bystanders managed to note down the registration number of the vehicle DL-2C4-4821.
