These identical twins give classical music a global twist in their new album

These identical twins may dress alike and have the same obsession with classical music, but when it comes to their favourite instruments, they love to differ 8212; Fateh Ali opts for the sitar while Murad Ali plays the sarangi. The brothers, however, have come together to create a unique jugalbandi of sitar and sarangi in their album, Convergence, released by Shubha Mudgal at the India Habitat Centre on Tuesday.

Sons of Ustad Ghulam Sabir Khan of the Moradabad gharana of sarangi players, Murad and Fateh have grown up amid music. 8220;Creating a fusion album without any confusion was the sole aim of this album,8221; says Fateh.

Convergence, he adds, also has influences like lounge, rock, jazz and latin music. But the highlight is the magic of the sitar and sarangi playing together, the pluck and bow blending in sweet harmony.

8220;World music is the order of the day, which is wonderful as long as you retain the classical base,8221; says Murad, who plays the fretless sarangi, which is not common among youngsters today.

The brothers presented one of the tracks of the album 8212; Infinity, in which the strains combine to create a sense of tranquility. Fateh also gave a technically intricate solo performance with raag jhanjoti by way of an elaborate alaap, jod and jhala.

The other tracks are Deacute;jagrave; vu, Colour of Love, Temptations and Saturday Night in Delhi. 8220;The best thing about the album is that every instrument has a temperament of its own,8221;said Mudgal.
