A footballer had to be hospitalised after a doctor mistakenly gave him methylated spirit to drink instead of water during a Kolkata Premier Division football league match here today.

Simanta Das, who plays for Kolkata Port Trust, sustained a chest injury after he collided with East Bengal8217;s Snehasis Chakraborty in the 26th minute of the second session and the referee promptly stopped play and called for medical aid. IFA appointed Dr Nirmal Polley attended to Das, who asked for some water. The doctor gave him a bottle of methylated spirit instead which the footballer drank.

He started vomiting and was rushed to the SSKM Hospital in a serious condition.
