NEW DELHI, February 10: Yet another life was lost for want of blood at a private nursing home in West Delhi’s Raghubir Nagar area. The victim’s family has, however, approached the police while blaming the doctors for the patient’s premature death.

Jasbir Kaur, a 23-year-old expectant mother, was wheeled into the nursing home on February 1 with acute labour pains. On February 3, she gave birth to twins in what the doctors described as a perfectly normal, but premature, delivery.

In less that 24 hours, the woman was shifted to the nearby Mata Chanan Devi Hospital in a critical condition, following heavy bleeding, and was subsequently declared dead due to excessive blood loss and other “post-delivery complications.”

The infants also died soon after.

The doctors now maintain that the patient could have been saved had she received blood transfusion in time after suffering a heavy loss of blood due to “post-partem haemorrhage.”

Since the neighbouring Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) hospital didn’t haveblood of the requisite group, precious time was lost in arranging for the same, they say.

In his complaint, victim’s husband Prith Pal Singh has, however, accused the doctors of negligence, saying that the doctors kept the family in the dark about the woman’s condition and had assured them that the mother and the babies were doing fine.

“After the delivery at around 9 pm, attending gynaecologist Dr Sudha Agarwal told me that Jasbir had developed some complications and needed to be operated upon for the removal of her uterus.

We grudgingly gave our assent. The demand for two units of blood came only at 10 pm for which we had to run around all across the city,” he recounts.
