Connoisseurs share their views on contemporary issues related to dance at Parikrama symposium
It was one of those rare occasions where connoisseurs from various dance forms in the field of Indian classical dance were together on a common platform-not to perform but to put forth their views on various topics related to Indian Classical dance forms.
8220;Dance is a performing art and an amalgamation of the literal meaning, emotions and what lies between the lines. It is these three elements that transcend beyond the audiovisual presentation to reach out to the hearts of the viewers,8221; said Sonal Mansingh while expressing her views on dance in general. 8220;Any kind of presentation is about communication and the supreme medium of presentation is emoting. Expressions thus become an irreplaceable part of dance. The western world has given us the word- body language but we do not realise that body language has been a tradition and a part of our cultural presentations for years,8221; she said, as she added, 8220;What sets our traditions apart from the others is the fact that while learning to portray emotions using each and every body part, our dancers do not forget that more than the expertise and technicalities which exist on a superficial level, it is the blessings by the guru that make the performance a memorable one.8221;
Commenting on the interrelation between art forms and time, professor C V Chandrashekhar said, 8220;Any form of art emerges through the personal experiences of the artist. The question whether dance is related to past, present or future is thus immaterial because basic emotions remain unchanged.8221; Adding to the point, Shama Bhate explained the significance of various movements in Kathak and said Kathak is one dance form that has always been in step with time. Darshan Jhaveri however felt that other than the time, it is the culture of a particular place that has an influence on the dance forms that originate from the region. 8220;Manipuri dance forms find their roots in history. Manipuri dance forms are rich in traditions based on Vaishnav philosophy. These dance forms are thus more inclined towards spiritual concepts such as epics, sankirtan, raas leela and so on,8221; she said.
