Thousands of ‘‘Ram Bhakts’’, who had converged at the Shabri Mata Mandir in Subir on Tuesday to enjoy a ‘‘Ram Katha’’ recital by Morari Bapu, got a heavy dose of politics and hardline Hindutva instead. The presence of Gujarat caretaker Chief Minister Narendra Modi and other Ministers added political colour to the otherwise religious gathering.
For the 10,000 people gathered at the grounds close to the Temple, it was a long wait, that ended at 3 p.m. with Modi and Morari Bapu’s arrival. Though they had come for the cause of ‘‘Hindutva’’, they barely acknowledged each other. Modi appeared to be much more at ease with in-charge of Swami Narayan temple in Nadiad Swami Ramdasji and founder of Hindu Jagran Manch Swami Aseemandji.
Swami Aseemandji said,‘‘How can people of other religions say the tribals have no religion when Lord Ram spent a large part of his life among tribals? In fact it was Shabri who suggested Lord Ram take Hanuman’s help.’’ Accusing Christian missionaries of indulging in large-scale conversions, he said, ‘‘Like Sita was abducted from the jungles, the Hindu religion is being abducted from these tribal hinterlands.’’
A subdued Modi was not at his rhetorical best on Tuesday much to the crowd’s disappointment. Modi said: ‘‘Revival of Hindu religion is very important but for some this is dangerous because Unko Jyoti Mein Bhi Jwala Hi Dhikti Hai (they see fires in the holy flame as well). The NASA has discovered a bridge constructed some 17 lakh years ago by humans that connects Lanka with India is proof enough that Hindu religion was in existence ages ago,’’ he elaborated. ‘‘If all destinations where Lord Ram travelled are joined, they will all pass through the tribal areas of India. So the tribals are the original Hindus being abducted by the Swarn Mrigs (Golden deer) roaming freely in the jungles.’’
