Wesley Sneijder has turned into the Dutch squad’s unofficial disc jockey and is orchestrating their Euro 2008 campaign on and off the pitch. Working on an idea picked up at his club side Real Madrid, the 24-year-old playmaker asked coach Marco van Basten ahead of the pre-tournament warm-ups if he could play some music in the dressing room to ease tension ahead of matches. The players listen to a variety of tunes, ranging from traditional Dutch music to rock and roll. “It works and it’s relaxing,” Sneijder told reporters. The players give Sneijder their favourite tunes from their iPods and he does the rest, hooking them up to the main speakers in the dressing room.

Fatal experience

Austrian authorities say a young woman who suffered from a heart ailment collapsed and died in the Vienna “fan zone” during Austria’s Euro 2008 loss to Germany. Officials identified the victim only as a 20-year-old Austrian. They said she died while being rushed to a hospital after collapsing around 9 pm (1900 GMT) Monday — about 15 minutes into the match.

Authorities said in a statement that an autopsy was planned to determine the exact cause of death, but they added that the woman had a heart condition.

Germany’s 1-0 victory eliminated co-host Austria from the European Championship. Police said they arrested 23 unruly fans — 21 Austrians, a German and a Pole — but reported no major incidents.
