With dacoits8217; kin trying their luck in the elections, from Chitrakoot and Banda districts, the Election Commission is facing a big challenge of holding free and fair elections in these parts.

The state government8217;s decision on Sunday to send a police team to these two districts comes a little late. A source in Chitrakoot district said that it was too late to send in a team to rein in dacoits like Sheo Kumar Dadua and Ambika Patel Thokia as their campaigns are in the last stage. Dacoits here have been hired to purchase votes.

In fact, their success in local politics has become a major problem for the police. Dadua and Thokia maintain good relations. Two other criminals, Munni Yadav and Pappu alias Kamal, are campaigning for Piyaria Devi, an RLD nominee. The source in Chitrakoot said all the major gangs have joined hands to help Piyaria reach the state Assembly.

The dacoits have a well-planned strategy to control the local administration here. Dadua8217;s son is the chairman of Chitrakoot Zila Panachayat and the Block pramukh of Karbi block is Thokia8217;s relative.

In Baberu constituency, notorious criminal Umar Kewat8217;s kin Siya is contesting the elections. Another candidate, Santosh, is a close relative of dacoit Nathu Yadav, who is in jail at present. 8220;In other constituencies in these two districts, gang leaders are supporting different candidates. They have their own areas of influence. A candidate has to pay to purchase a farman from the gang,8221; said a former Chitrakoot SP.

Sources said more than 500 villages are under Dadua and Thokia8217;s influence.
