Sri Lanka beat Zimbabwe by 12 runs (Duckworth-Lewis method) in the first one-day international in Bulawayo on Tuesday. This was after rain caused the match to be shortened to 33 over first, and then 27 overs. At the end of 27, Lanka’s target was 132, but they had managed to score 144 for 4 at that stage, riding on a fine unbeaten 73 from Kumar Sangakkara.

Earlier, Zimbabwe captain Tatenda Taibu put the turmoil between the Zimbabwe Cricket Union (ZCU) and its leading players behind him with a gritty 96 not out in the first one-day international against Sri Lanka in Bulawayo on Tuesday.

Taibu, the first black player to lead his country, helped his side to 211-6 after Zimbabwe had been reduced to 2-1 after just 14 balls of the match. The 20-year-old wicketkeeper faced 151 balls and hit six fours to score a career-best and steer the home side to a respectable total after they had teetered on 79-5.

Zimbabwe were fielding an inexperienced side for the match after 13 white players, including former captain Heath Streak, made themselves unavailable as part of their ongoing battle with the ZCU over several issues, including the composition of the selection panel.

The inexperienced line-up started poorly after being sent in by Sri Lanka captain Marvan Atapattu, with openers Vusi Sibanda and debutant Brendon Taylor dismissed without scoring. Dion Ebrahim (13) then helped Taibu add 46 runs for the third wicket before he advanced down the pitch to Zoysa and edged a catch to Mahela Jayawardene.

Brief scores:

Zimbabwe:

211-6 in 50 overs (T Taibu 96 n.o., A Maregwede 37, M Nkala 33 n.o.; Zoysa 3-21) vs Sri Lanka (K Sangakkara 73 n.o.)
