With just two days left for Commonwealth Games president Mike Fennel to arrive to oversee the steps undertaken by India for hosting the 2010 Commonwealth Games here, the Government today announced the formation of various committees for the purpose.Sports Minister Sunil Dutt will head the apex committee, while Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi will chair the organising committee. The apex committee will have an over-riding power and responsibility for overseeing and co-ordinating the Games. The organising committee will conduct the Games and deal with the central government through Sports Ministry and with the Delhi government.The announcement was made by Human Resources Development Minister Arjun Singh. Singh heads a group of ministers (GOM), constituted for overseeing the organisation of the Games. The GOM met here last night.When asked about the delay, Singh contended, ‘‘There is no delay.’’ The GOM itself was constituted some two weeks ago, he added. As for the prospect of India losing the Games due to the delay in formation of committees, the minister said: ‘‘I can say that there are no apprehensions. The responsibility of hosting the event is of the country and there is no way we can lose it.’’He asserted: ‘‘We want not only to make it a success but set an example. This is going to help the sports and culture of the country and show off the nation’s sporting capabilities.’’A three-member sub-committee of GOM, headed by Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, will deal with all financial matters. Delhi’s Lt. Governor will have the overall responsibility for security, law and order and matters coming under DDA.A sub-committee headed by the chief minister of Delhi will look after all issues coming under the Delhi government.
