Jr artistes fight on a film set, 4 injured

Four junior artistes were injured, two seriously, when members of two rival unions went on a rampage on a film set at Film City in Goregaon on Friday.According to the police, the trouble started at around 2.30 pm when production controller Imtiaz Ansari objected to junior artiste Chandmohammed Sheikh working on the set because he did not belong to the Film Studio Allied Mazdoor Union, whose members were hired for the film under production. Sheikh was a member of Bhartiya Kamgar Sena. Sheikh left the set and returned a while later with BKS activist Sudhakar Sawant and seven other men. Following heated arguments members of rival unions started swinging sticks and bamboos and pelted stones at each other. In the melee some eyewitnesses were also beaten up till the situation was brought under control after a police squad attached to the Aarey Sub Division rushed to the spot.The police said that a case has been registered against Abdul Hamid Sheikh and sevenothers who have fled.

Deepak Saxena 20, Sayed Dawood Skeikh 30, Vasudev Nair and Mohammed Imtiaz Ansari were undergoing treatment for their grievous injuries at a nearby nursing home. While Nair fractured his right hand besides suffering injuries on his head, Ansari suffered a bone fracture.

One stabbed to death

A fruit vendor was found stabbed to death near a shop at Byculla vegetable market early this morning. The body of Kamruddin Sayed was spotted by a passerby lying in a pool of blood near gala no. 85 at 1 am. Police said Syed suffered multiple stab wounds inflicted by a sharp weapon. The Byculla police have registered a case of murder. Further investigations are on, they added.

6 extortionists arrested

Six persons were arrested in three separate incidents on charges of threatening city businessmen in the last 24 hours.

The Byculla police arrested four men who posing as members of Chhota Shakeel gang demanded Rs 10 lakh from a businessman at Peddar Road. They were identifiedas Abdul Salim Ibrahim alias Teja, Mohammed Mansuri, Amir Mansuri and Girish Shah. They were arrested from a hideout in Byculla.

In the second incident, the MRA Marg police arrested one Mohammed Abdul Hamid Sheikh who allegedly demanded protection money from shop owners at Musafirkhana near Crawford Market, while sleuths of the Anti-Extortion Cell arrested Ramchandra Pandey for threatening trader Satyendra Thakur. The accused was demanding money for settling a property dispute.

Dealer robbed

Four unidentified men robbed a medicine dealer of Rs 2.93 lakh while on his way to deposit the cash in a bank at Mahim on Saturday.

Police stated that Ketan Virchand Shah 28 and with his employee were accosted and beaten up with iron rods by four men who arrived in a car near Gopi Tank road. They snatched the money and sped away. Police are investigating the case.
