NEW DELHI, December 16: From August 1985 to May 1987 I went to the Delhi Public School in R.K. Puram, New Delhi. For the period that I was there, DPS, I believe, had the world8217;s largest collection of ghouls, geeks, dweebs, dorks, butt-monkeys and bozos. From this bunch of losers, I chose several compatriots, many of whom remain my best friends till this day.

This is how Sanjay last name missing introduces you to The DPS Shrine8217;, his own web page dedicated to the city school. There are many more like him 8212; students, ex-students and even principals who have turned to the Internet so that their golden and not-so-golden moments in school do not fade away.

The flood of sites which hits you when you search the Net for information on schools have quite a mix of subjects. Some are resumes and personal interest sites piled on to free server space, others overflow with self-adulation and nostalgic ruminations, still others spew damnation on their alma maters.

Then there are some which declare themselves to be the 8220;official8221; home pages of schools. A curiously large number of these relate to Sardar Patel Vidyalaya SPV and come complete with the school logo emblazoned on top. If Rajiv Betul8217;s web-page rajiv.com/spv is to be believed, SPV was the first Indian school to have its own page on cyberspace. Besides a link to the SPV Net8217;, which comes with e-mail and search facilities, visitors who hit this site get access to the school8217;s songs, photographs and a database on almost everyone who has ever had anything to do with the school. Another SPV web page claiming official status is ece.iit.edu/ akohli/spv.html. This site comes with a SPV chat room, though going by its web-counter 8,323 hits since July 23, 1995 the people connected with this school are not a very chatty lot.

But Ajay Jadeja should have chosen Modern School Barakhamba Road over SPV if he sought Net glory as well. An amazing number of web pages, which answer to Modern School, have nothing to do with the school or even the site8217;s author. They, instead, put the spotlight on the school8217;s many star pupils. So you have an umpteen number of pages likejaan.com/shahrukh.htmwith Shah Rukh Khan staring at you in various poses, the accompanying text a glowing reference to the Bollywood phenomenon. Then there8217;sredifindia.com/news/1998/mar/20apang.htm, which showers praise on ex-Modernite Omak Apang, Arunachal Pradesh CM Gegong Apang8217;s son, for being 8220;the youngest Cabinet minister8221;.

Principal R.K. Bhatia says: 8220;We encourage our students to make full use of the Internet to fulfill their creative and information needs. It8217;s the new-age medium. Recently, former prime minister I.K. Gujral inaugurated our official website. This reflects the school8217;s outlook towards the Internet.8221;

8220;Though we have around 50 computers with Internet facilities, we make sure our students don8217;t misuse the Net,8221; he adds. 8220;At the recent trade fair, we even arranged for lessons for our teachers. But the kids are far more comfortable with the Internet than the older generation.8221;

DPS R.K. Puram Principal S. Chona says: 8220;We have an official home page, but our students are members of the global village and contribute their bit to the establishment of a universal brotherhood. We encourage the children to explore the Net, but we do make sure that they do not have access to the triple X-rated websites.8221;

As for Sanjay8217;s DPS Shrine8217;, she says: 8220;I haven8217;t seen his website, but in this world the positive and negative must co-exist.8221; Another DPS website http:www/alpha.nornet.on.ca/ delhips/principal.html comes with a huge message from the principal on why the school is an invitational one. 8220;A school where everyone is welcome, a place where learning is our number one priority, a place where everyone can make mistakes and learn from them, a place where everyone has an opportunity to grow.8221;

Yet another DPS site delhipublicschool.com/envir.htm explains why there is a touch of green to everything connected with DPS.

8220;The founding fathers of the school perhaps foresaw the future and decided upon the school color as green as a constant reminder that the salvation of mother earth would only be by thinking green. With that end in view the school has been a forerunner in various social projects from the time of its establishment.8221;
