July 13: Irate mobs protesting against Friday’s killing of 11 demonstrators disrupted traffic on the Central railway for the third consecutive day today. One coach of a suburban local train was set afire at Kasara by mobs to coincide with the funeral of victims of Friday’s firing. Fire tenders from Igatpuri and Shahpur were summoned to quell the fire. As a result, traffic was disrupted for four hours after 10:40 am.
Rail traffic was disrupted at Chembur between 3:00 to 3:30 pm by stone-throwing mobs. At Dombivli, all the four tracks were blocked for more than an hour in the morning. According to a CR spokesman, six mail and express trains and four suburban locals were delayed for nearly two-and-a-half hours due to the violence.
The Eastern Express highway was blocked by traffic police at Sion.
The heavy vehicular traffic was diverted from Dharavi on the 80-feet road. Vehicles coming to the city from Thane via Ghatkopar were also diverted through alternative routes. These arrangements, however, created chaos on the highway resulting in traffic jams.
Meanwhile, a bandh has been declared in Thane tomorrow.
