A slick new cafe adds to the ambience of the bylanes of Old Delhi
The bustling streets of Old Delhi, dotted with kebab counters and strong aromas of Indian street food, hardly seem conducive to an English breakfast or spaghetti. Now, at Comfort Inn The President Hotel on Asaf Ali Road, you can sample pancakes with your mutton burra at their new coffee shop Cafeacute; 23. The old-world hotel shut down in 1992. The lobby has been smartly cordoned off with glass panels to make room for this 40-seater restaurant and bar. The coffee shop opens at 7 am with breakfast options that include Danish muffins, croissants to go with your espresso or a masala omelette.
Must-try
We begin our meal with Mulligatawny soup Rs 105. This version is curry flavoured with shreds of chicken and a spoonful of cooked rice. Chicken President Rs 225 is an interesting dish of grilled chicken with a sweet and tangy red raisin sauce. The kitchen, however, specialises in kebabs and curries, no doubt because of the hotel8217;s proximity to the heart of Old Delhi. Their Kashmiri Kebab Rs 205 is impressively done, and The Burra Kebab Rs 225, a serving of spicy lamb chops is another worthy entreacute;e. We also tried Dal President Rs 150, a standard version of Dal Makhni. We finished our meal with a sampling of plain pancake Rs 95 with maple syrup and melted butter. Pancakes are available only in mornings, but if you plead a little the kitchen might serve them at other times as well.
Give a miss
The Pastas at Cafeacute; 23 definitely need more work. We tried Spaghetti Bolognaise Rs 185, an overdone version of spaghetti with mince meat in a sweetish tomato dressing. Most of the other western dishes didn8217;t look too appetizing either.
