The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will introduce a course on Civic Sense and Environment in its primary schools from the next session. The course is aimed at teaching children about the importance of keeping the environment clean and the need to preserve resources.

Children will be taught about basic civic responsibilities like discipline, public health and hygiene. Issues like the need and importance of keeping surroundings clean, not smoking in public places, the importance of trees and saving water and power will be a part of the course.

“To make Delhi a world class city it is important to inculcate good habits in children and if it is made a part of the school curriculum, it will be taken up seriously both by teachers and students,” MCD Standing Committee chairman Vijender Gupta said.

The new course will be a part of the MCD school syllabus from next year. “After we have implemented it successfully in our own schools, we plan to take it to the Delhi government and make it a compulsory subject till Class XII,” Gupta said.
