Under attack from Dalit organisations and activists for alleged inaction in the Bhotmange killings at Khairlanji, the police today sought to clear the air claiming that they had taken all steps to ensure justice for Bhaiyyalal.

8220;As many as 44 villagers have been arrested in the case under non-bailable sections such as murder, rioting, destruction of evidence and SC/ST Atrocities Act. All of them are now in magisterial custody,8217;8217; a police source said, adding that two cops have been suspended for dereliction of duty.

8220;We are in the process of fortifying the fragile evidence,8221; said IGP Anti-Naxalite Operations and in-charge IG Nagpur Range Pankaj Gupta. He said till 10 days after the incident, the police were more preoccupied with the arrangement for VIP visits to the village than the investigation.

Meanwhile, Khairlanji Action Committee chief convenor Milind Pakhale today demanded a CBI probe. Demanding dismissal of the government, Pakhale said: 8220;The police haven8217;t yet arrested some of the women involved in the crime.8221;
Activists storm Maha Mantralaya
Over 100 activists from various organisations entered Mantralaya 8212; the high-security headquarters of the Maharashtra government 8212; and staged demonstration outside CM Vilasrao Deshmukh8217;s room on Wednesday demanding action in the Khaitlanji Dalit killing case. The weekly state cabinet meeting was in progress at the time. They demanded deputy CM RR Patil8217;s resignation and a judicial probe into the incident.
Brinda Karat to visit Nagpur
CPIM MP Brinda Karat will visit Nagpur on Thursday to meet CM Vilasrao Deshmukh and demand a probe into the issue. Karat criticised Deputy CM RR Patil8217;s statement that Naxalites were instigating Dalits. 8220;We will raise the issue in Parliament because of the role of the Maharashtra government and the absence of any reaction from the Centre,8221; she said.
