Hours ahead of the India-Australia tie, the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA)—the organiser of the one-dayer—found itself ducking a beamer hurled down by, of all people, the local police.

Deeming it a private programme, the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate wanted a hefty Rs 40 lakh as user charges for providing security to the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, where the Indian and Australian cricketers battled it out on Friday. This came as a shocker to the HCA, which was hoping to rake in Rs 4 crore from the ODI.

A communication, signed by Cyberabad Police Commissioner S Prabhakar Reddy, explained the security measures that involved deployment of over 2000 personnel and demanded monetary allowances for their additional duty.

A shocked HCA, which claimed that never in the past had the police demanded user charges, scooted across its president and Labour Minister G Vinod to Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy for succour. An avid cricket buff himself, Reddy assured Vinod that he would direct the Cyberabad Police Commissioner to waive the charges, bringing relieved smiles to the faces of the troubled HCA honchos.
