
The Srinagar bureau chief of The Indian Express, Muzamil Jaleel, was beaten up by some policemen, who were escorting Superintendent of Police East Rafiqul Hassan, last night. A complaint was lodged against the SP and his guards at the Rajbagh police station today.
The incident occurred around 9:15 pm yesterday, when Jaleel was returning home from work. While crossing the road near his Jawahar Nagar residence, he noticed a road accident involving a private car and one of Hassan8217;s escort vehicles.
Jaleel, who managed to reach home, was rushed to SMHS Hospital, from where the doctors referred him to SKIMS, Soura hospital. He suffered injuries on the head and is under observation. The extent of the injuries, according to the doctors, can only be ascertained after obtaining the CT scan report. The state8217;s top police and civil officials have promised to take action against the policemen. 8216;8216;The case will not die down. I have asked IG, Kashmir, to inquire into the matter. Let me assure you that action will be taken against the guilty,8217;8217; said Chief Secretary I.S. Malhi.
Inspector General of Police K Rajendra said DIG, Kashmir, Farooq Ahmad had been asked to conduct an inquiry. 8216;8216;After his report, we will order a departmental inquiry,8217;8217; he said.
State DGP A K Suri said he would look into the matter. 8216;8216;Dekhtey hain, baat kartay hain Let us see, let me talk,8217;8217; he said. Ashok Jaitly, principal advisor to CM, and Pramod Jain, CE O, assured action. Meanwhile, journalists in Valley have condemned the police action.
