The Congress today said it will make a move in Uttar Pradesh only if the BSP-BJP government falls due to ‘‘its own inherent contradictions’’.Party spokesperson Anand Sharma said there has been no change in the Congress stand in the last few days. ‘‘It is premature to comment. Let the evolving situation reach its logical conclusion. We have always been against horse-trading or forced defections. If the government in UP falls due to inherent contradictions we will take a decision at the appropriate time,’’ he said. The party today did not look convinced with the Samajwadi Party’s list of 204 supporters and chose to wait for the Govenor’s decision on the matter. It neither denied nor confirmed having assured SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav that he will get the party’s support if the UP govt falls. The Congress, however, hinted that while it may not go all the way with the SP, it was against the continuation of the BJP-BSP coalition in UP.Support to the Samajwadi Party will help the Congress maintain its secular credentials, espcially in the run-up to the elections in Gujarat. But the party needs to take into account the fear in the UP Congress that aligning with Mulayam Singh could come in the way of its revival in the state. The party’s central leadership is in touch with the leaders in UP. Senior leader Pranab Mukherjee is in Lucknow.
