The Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee on Friday expelled its former spokesperson Seema Chowdhury from the party’s primary membership for six years. The action follows Chowdhury’s complaint of sexual harassment against Akhilesh Pratap Singh, the party’s chief spokesperson.

Chowdhury had approached the court seeking registration of a criminal case against Singh. In her plea, Chowdhury claimed that Singh had subjected her to sexual harassment and misbehaviour in front of the UPCC headquarters. She said the incident occurred on November 12, on the day of Rahul Gandhi’s visit.

The party’s Disciplinary Action Committee decided to expel Chowdhury, saying that the allegations were “baseless”.
