Condemning the attack on churches in Orissa, the Congress on Wednesday demanded a 8220;comprehensive inquiry8221; into the incident.
Criticising the BJD-BJP Government in the state for its failure to take preventive action, permanent invitee to the Congress Working Committee and in-charge of party affairs in Orissa Ajay Maken said there were 8220;enough indications8221; for the state Government to proactively undertake steps to maintain law and order and communal harmony.
8220;Instead, the Government exhibited its now characteristic unmindfulness to basic issues and let the situation take a violent turn,8221; Maken said in the release, demanding a comprehensive inquiry into the incident. The Orissa Pradesh Congress Committee would also undertake an inquiry and submit a report within three days of lifting of the curfew in the area, he added.
Meanwhile, AICC spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said at a press conference here that the Orissa Government should take immediate steps to stop the violence. 8220;The unfortunate incidents in Orissa are not good for the country or for any civilised society,8221; he said.
Asked if the Congress was in favour of an intervention by the National Commission for Minorities, Ahmed said the state Government should get some time to normalise the situation. 8220;If the situation does not normalise, then bodies like the Minorities Commission can be approached,8221; he said. As fingers were being pointed at Sangh organisations, the ruling BJD should look at the entire episode 8220;carefully,8221; he added.
