Complaint against Gogoi filed for poll code violation

The CPI has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission against Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, accusing him of violating the model code of conduct by making 8220;personal attacks8221; against rival contestants.

The CPI has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission against Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, accusing him of violating the model code of conduct by making 8220;personal attacks8221; against rival contestants. According to the model code of conduct, contesting candidates can criticise the policies and programmes of rival parties but cannot make personal attacks on rival candidates.

8220;The Chief Minister, in several of his public meetings, attacked the candidates at a personal level and so we have filed a complaint with election observer,8221; CPI Politburo member and state unit president Promode Gogoi told reporters on Friday.

Lakhimpur tensed, Army deployed

The Army was deployed on Friday in Assam8217;s North Lakhimpur town as protestors blocked roads and stopped all election campaigning after a youth was killed in police firing.

After a police vehicle hit and injured a youth here last evening, a mob gheraoed the Panigaon Police Station in protest, during which the police firing occurred. Claiming the situation had gone out of hand, the police opened fire killing a youth. Six other people were also injured in the firing. They were rushed to the North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital. Local units of the Asom Gana Parishad and of the Jatiyabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad both called a bandh on Friday in protest against the firing.
