Come on, RSS

8226; The slogan given by K. Sudarshan, 8216;Hum do, hamare anek8217; for Hindus is ridiculous. His argument that Muslims are deliberately increasing their population and Christians are doing the same by conversions is misleading. We are a democracy based on citizenship rights, which are equal for people belonging to any religion. The country is not going to face any threat just because people of one religion number more or less. The number of children is linked more to literacy and social development than with religion. Southern states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have an overall lower rate of population growth while the BIMARU states have a much higher rate of population growth. Despite the concoctions of the RSS, the population of Christians is declining over the last our decades.

Another quota

8226; The recommendation of the National Monitoring Committee for Minority Education for the HRD ministry to institute a quota for Muslims in IITs and IIMs is a step in the right direction. Such progressive steps will go a long way in assuring Muslims of their due place in the country.

A secular affair

8226; Let8217;s get the basic facts of this Volcker affair straight. Natwar Singh may have other vices but he is a fully secular person. He and the secular Congress are accused of taking money from Saddam, again a secular person though he can be accused of other issues. The hounding of these people only shows the low level of thinking by the communal forces. In fact, the entire episode showcases Natwar8217;s and Congress8217;s networking capabilities and also the respect the entire world is giving to the Congress and Natwar. Can any communal NDA leader claim that he or she is known outside India and has friends in all the countries of the world who can get him or her lucrative contracts?

Yes, Sania

8226; This refers to Sania Mirza8217;s India Empowered column IE, November 16. After a long hiatus, India has an aggressive woman role model. I second all her views and wish her the very best of luck for her endeavours.

Consider this

8226; For all the satire your editorial spews 8216;Little Stalinists8217;, IE, November 16, the truth is that it is far away from the truth. First, the factual errors. You make the mistake of brushing the entire student union and the entire Left wing in the campus with the same colour. On November 14, the Left groups that do not subscribe to the notion that the Indian state is semi-colonial in nature, did not protest or disrupt the PM8217;s speech. Secondly, your comparison of the US Air Force with the student activists of JNU is nauseating. A few things for you to consider: student elections in this campus are entirely conducted by the students, with a nominated body of Election Commission members who do this job purely to satisfy their 8220;democratic spirit8221; unlike the US Air Force who in their endeavor to spread democracy go about pummeling thousands of Iraqis and justify the same as 8220;collateral damage8221;. Then the protests, marches, mess campaigns, public talks that feature in this university daily are done with a purpose 8212; to keep the culture of debate and discussion alive. Unlike the US which treats the UN with contempt and debates in the Security Council as a waste of time. True, a large number of civil service recruits are from JNU, but you include political activists in these, which is patently untrue.
