CHANDIGARH, July 21: Teachers of colleges in Chandigarh and Punjab today went on mass casual leave to protest the non implementation of the recommendations of the University Grants Commission (UGC) regarding the pay scales.

Teachers of Punjab Agricultural University Regional Research Station, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Gurdaspur also proceeded on mass casual leave in response to the call given by Punjab Agricultural University Teachers Association. The spokesman for PAUTA, Dr V.K. Vashisht condemned the policies of the Ministry of Human Resource Development. In Amritsar, teachers of government and private colleges also took mass casual leave. Teaching work remained suspended in all colleges of the city today, according to union leaders.

Shimla: The college lecturers in Himachal Pradesh wore black badges to express their solidarity with their counterparts in Delhi and other parts of the country.Teaching work in the colleges, however, remained unaffected. The lecturers also held gate meetings.

A spokesman of the lecturers said a delegation of their fellow lecturers had also gone to Delhi to join the protest at Delhi.

Rohtak: The teachers of all educational institutes went on mass casual leave today.

The All-India Federation of University and College Teachers Association (AIFUCTO) gave the call for casual leave to protest against the Union government’s procrastination concerning pay scales, promotional avenues and better service conditions.

Later they left for Delhi in charted buses to participate in the “March to Parliament”.

The response was near total. Saroj Hooda, principal of Government College for Women, said the entire regular staff of 91 was on casual leave. R. N. Gupta of Vaish College confirmed that the entire staff of 45 was on leave.

The situation was no better in Vaish Mahila Mahavidyalaya where the whole staff of 29 was on leave, Shyama Sharma, principal, said. S. R. Madan, principal of LN Hindu College, said that his entire staff of 32 was on leave.

All educational institutes in the district wore a deserted look. Students did not turn up to attend class.

It was the same situation in MDU. The authorities were tight-lipped on the issue. They said the heads of department were asked to submit a report. The MDU teachers association spokesman said all teachers went on mass CL.
