Chief Minister D D Lapang on Thursday warned the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) that the police operations against the banned outfit will continue. He also said the Government is ready to assist members of the outfit if they decide to quit the HNLC.

“The militants cannot be allowed to gain an upper hand and the police will continue with their pre-emptive strike against the outfit,” Lalpang said at a condolence meeting held for DSP Raymond Philip Diengdoh, who lost his life during an encounter with the HNLC on Wednesday at Ri-Bhoi district. Lapang said the militants are trying to destabilise the society and it is the duty of the Government and the police to fight and stop them. He said the Government has enhanced security measures to deal with militants and will act according to the necessity. The CM said the state police is equipped to deal with militants.

Lapang said the state has been urging the Centre to use its diplomatic channels to prevail upon Bangladesh to flush out HNLC and other militants. He said he had already discussed the matter with the Union Home Minister and requested for funds to modernise the state police.
