CHANDIGARH, Feb 23: To improve sanitation and create civic sense, the local Municipal Corporation has decided to launch a special cleanliness drive in a phased manner from tomorrow.

Talking to Newsline here today, Mayor Kewal Krishan Adiwal said that the city has been divided into two parts and each part would be visited by the municipal commissioner and secretary to assess the work. The councillors are also being attached to the campaign to ensure its success.

Even though a cleanliness drive had been undertaken from February 16, this drive is being considered special because the area councillors would monitor it in their respective areas.

Urging the residents to keep the city neat and clean, the Mayor said that the offenders would be challanned under the provisions of the various sections of the Punjab Municipal Act for throwing garbage at places other than the designated disposal points.

Sector 29, Industrial Area Phase-II, under the supervision of area councillors Rajinder Kumar and Kamlesh, are being cleaned tomorrow and Gian Chand Gupta and Harish Bhanot would oversee the drive in Sector 30, 32 and 46 on March 4. On March 5, under the supervision of Ranjana Shahi Sector 31 and 47 would be cleaned.

While Sectors 34, 35 and 44 are being cleaned on March 8 under the supervision of Harjinder Kaur, drive in Sectors 36, 37 and 38 would be monitored by R.S. Bedi, Maj Gen Rajinder Nath and Parshan Kaur on March 9.

The cleaning of Sectors 39, 40, Maloya Colony, 55 and 56 would be done on March 10 and that of Sectors 41, 42, 43, Budheri, Buterla and Attawa on March 11 followed by Sector 45, Burial and Colony Number 5 the next day. These areas would be supervised by councillors Kamla Sharma and Bachan Singh.
