A slice of Andhra Pradesh (AP) is on offer at the Tilak Smarak Mandir as part of the Lepakshi Heritage Collection. This 10-day exhibition, which started on March 4, showcases the art and craft with which the state is associated. On display are the famous Hyderabad pearls, Kondapally toys, vases and jewellery in Bidri work and intricately-carved wood panels. The handloom section seems to have drawn a sizeable response, with Pochampalli saris, Kalamkari bedspreads, Mangalgiri cottons on sale.

An interesting part of the exhibition is the traditional puppets fashioned out of leather and painted with vegetable dyes. These puppets, based on mythological characters and a speciality of the Nimalkunta town in AP, are available alongside leather lampshades. For those with an eye for traditional arts and crafts, this exhibition is definitely worth a dekko.

Melody makers
It’s an evening to sit back and enjoy some Marathi melodies. At the Vedstastrottejak Sabhagriha on the evening of March 13. Organised by the cultural group Sumanjali, Manatlya Bhavkalya will feature scores composed by Madhusudhan Kulkarni. The singers will include his students – Narendra Kulkarni, Raghunath Khandalkar, Rajeev Barve, Madhuri Kulkarni and Manjiri Joshi amongst others. They will be accompanied by musicians Pramod Ranade, Anil Sukhapure and Vishwanath Gaikwad.

Another plus!
Health Plus, an organisation working for the prevention and control of AIDS, is organising its fifth Intermedical College AIDS Quiz at the Mahatma Gandhi Auditorium, B.J. Medical College, on March 9. An annual event, the idea behind the quiz is to evoke interest about the subject amongst undergraduate medical students and to help them develop a positive attitude toward caring for HIV/AIDS patients. With the students on the threshold of the healing profession, this is one positive gesture.
