.

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram is likely to initiate moves towards a possible merger between the party he helped found, the Congress Jananayaka Peravai (CJP), and the Congress. The union, it is learnt, is likely to take place on November 25.

Sources said Chidambaram is keen on a merger between the two to dispel, once for all, doubts about the party’s future in the state. Nearly 60 CJP office-bearers will be reaching Delhi from Chennai on the big day.

With elections to TN due in another two years, a merger will present a unified Congress to the electorate.

‘‘Chidambaram had hinted at a merger which would take place once Sonia Gandhi sets a date for it, which in all probability, will be fixed on November 25,’’ sources said from Chennai.
