Cheating menace at GNDU: 26 to appear before UMC panel

In yet another incident that has exposed the menace of cheating in Guru Nanak Dev University, 26 cases of use unfair means of copying UMC have come to the fore in the supplementary tests conducted for various streams in September. They would be summoned before the UMC committee of the university on Saturday.

The copying had been noticed during the coding of the exam results. The students had allegedly left identification marks on their answer sheet, which is not allowed. Those found guilty are likely to be disqualified for a minimum of two years. Sources said these students were from varied educational streams, including commerce, electronic maintenance and computer applications.

Sources added that this is not the first time that such a thing has happened, as UMC cases are reported almost every year in the university.

Confirming these cases, Dr Gurnam Singh, professor incharge, examination, at the university, said, 8220;Some of them had even written their names, roll numbers and telephone numbers on the cover pages of the answer books, which is prohibited.8221;

He added that the details of these students had been sent to the UMC committee. 8220;The committee, headed by a judge, would decide the matter,8221; he said.

Registrar Dr R.S. Bawa said stern action would be taken against students found guilty. 8220;The punishment in such cases amounts to disqualification for a minimum period of two years,8221; he said.
