NASHIK, DEC 12: The assistant registrar of the Yeshwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU), Dilip Ambilvade, was arrested last night for allegedly accepting bribes to the tune of Rs 3.76 lakh and admitting undeserving students to the B Ed course.
According to a complaint filed by the registrar, Dr Rajendra Vadnagare, at the Nashik Taluka police station yesterday, Ambilvade and college principal A K Kukade from Partur accepted bribes from students who could not make it to the pre-admission merit list. Twenty-six students were admitted to the B Ed course between July and December this year, in gross violation of the merit list drawn up for admissions.
The fraud was discovered by some bona fide students, who complained to deputy chief minister Gopinath Munde, who in turn asked the YCMOU Vice-Chancellor Ashok Pradhan to investigate. Subsequently, a three-member committee was formed on November 10 to look into the allegation. The YCMOU then found that 26 students had jumped the merit list and got admissions. They were later expelled. Ambilvade became a prime suspect as he sealed cupboards and table drawers and went on leave as soon as the scandal was revealed. The V-C then applied his own seal to prevent tampering of evidence. Later some students confessed they had paid Rs 15,000 each for jumping the merit list.
