Indian coach Greg Chappell today praised captain Rahul Dravid for his brave decision to bat first and the batsmen for their tough, fighting performance on a tough opening day wicket in the first cricket Test against South Africa here.
8220;It was difficult to get momentum on that pitch because of the pitch and interruptions. It8217;s a wicket where bowlers would hold the upper hand throughout,8221; Chappell said after India laboured to 156/5.
8220;It8217;s a kind of wicket where it8217;s difficult to feel in. You could anytime get a ball which would get you out. So in that sense all stands were useful, especially the one between Laxman and Ganguly in the final session when runs came at a reasonable clip.8221;
Chappell said the decision to bat first was partly due to the problems the team could face batting last and hoped the team would make a reasonable first innings total. 8220;We usually look to make 350 runs in the first innings and let8217;s see how far we can progress.8221;
