CHANDIGARH, Oct 17: Chandigarh were crowned champions in the Punjab Inter-District Under-19 Dhruve Pandove cricket tournament. They beat Ludhiana on the basis of a huge 152-run first-innings lead in the three-day final which concluded at the Dhruve Pandove Stadium in Patiala.

In fact, the last day’s play was of only academic interest after Chandigarh had bowled Ludhiana out for 260 in reply to their mammoth first-innings score of 412 for 7. Resuming at their overnight score of 66 for no loss, the two Chandigarh openers, Vikramjit Singh Sodhi and Gaurav Gupta flayed the Ludhiana bowling attack, which anyway was lacking on motivation.

The two carried on till 176 runs had been added before Gaurav fell for a well-made 46. Sodhi utilised the opportunity to come with a disciplined century, scoring 126. He was presented Rs 5100 for his century by Khalsa Singh.

Apart from Sodhi’s century today, Chandigarh skipper Yuvraj Singh’s 170 on the opening day and a five-wicket haul by off-spinner Sanjay Dhull, who captured 20 wickets in this tourney to go with his 21 in the senior Katoch Shield.
Scores: Chandigarh (Ist innings): 412 for 7 and (2nd innings): 206 for 2 (Vikramjit Singh Sodhi 126, Gaurav Gupta 46, Yuvraj Singh 45 n.o) beat Ludhiana (Ist innings): 260.

Yuvraj to lead
Yuvraj Singh will lead Punjab in the North Zone Under-19 cricket tournament for the Cooch Behar Trophy. Punjab play their first match against Jammu and Kashmir at Patiala from October 20 to 22.

The players are to report to coach Sukhwinder Bawa at Patiala’s Dhruve Pandove Stadium on October 19.
