The Centre on Thursday reviewed coastal vigilance and asked concerned states and union territories to take immediate steps to tighten surveillance of coastal areas.

Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta asked the states and the union territories for measures to increase surveillance and security along the coast. The steps, discussed as part of the Coastal Security Scheme sanctioned by the Centre in 2005, included construction of police stations and checkposts.

Representatives from nine coastal states and four union territories were asked for regular feedback on implementation, including development of infrastructure and training of personnel.

The Rs 400-crore coastal security scheme that was recommended by the Group of Ministers on national security is being implemented over five years. The scheme includes 73 police stations, 97 checkposts and 58 outposts. There is an additional Rs 151-crore outlay for recurring expenses.
