Srinagar, July 31: Action was taken against Shiv Sena chief Bal thackeray as per law and on the basis of a Supreme Court ruling, Chief Election Commissioner M S Gill today said.

Defending the EC decision to strike off Thackeray8217;s name from the voter8217;s list till December 10, 2001, Gill said the action was taken against him under Section eight of the Representation of People8217;s Act, 1950-51.The Supreme Court had suggested to the President on December 11, 1995 to disenfranchise the Sena chief for six years for his inflammatory election speeches, he said.

8220;Six national and 36 regional parties, including the Shiv Sena, are registered with the Election Commission and all are equal before us,8221; he said. The CEC refused further comment on the subject, saying: 8220;We are acting as per our Constitution8221;.
