The CBI today stated that the warrant for the extradition of former Union Carbide chairman Warren Anderson will be handed over to the Ministry of External Affairs within a week.
This, the investigating agency said, would be done once the relevant documents backing their claim for extradition are translated from Hindi to English. The CBI has already taken nearly two months to process the warrant.
The last hearing in the case was towards the end of August, in which the chief judicial magistrate had asked the CBI to submit a report regarding the progress being made.
During the last hearing, the court had turned down a CBI request that charges against Anderson be diluted from culpable homicide to negligence. This offence would not be enough to seek Anderson’s extradition.
Anderson had till recently been listed as untraced in the US before he was tracked down by a Greenpeace activist.
