In the case against retired Major General V K Singh, who has been charged under the Official Secrets Act, the CBI on Monday moved the court for an in-camera trial.

In the application filed before Additional Sessions Judge K S Mohi, the CBI contended that the information in the book and other documents recovered from Singh were sensitive in nature and revealing them openly could be “prejudicial” to the interests of the nation.

The court asked the defence to file a reply to the CBI application. The matter was posted for hearing on November 19.

When contacted, Singh said: “the CBI has in their other application that opposes bail claimed that they have seized incriminating evidence that included copies of the book, the soft copy of the book, agreement with the publisher etc. One wonders if they are pressing for an in-camera proceeding where the book which is available outside would be discussed.”

“It is an important case under the Official Secrets Act, it is natural for us to want in-camera proceedings. We have also told the court that the case has now been shifted to a different branch and a new investigating officer would handle the case,” said a CBI official who refused to be quoted.

The case created a controversy when the retired officer was booked under the section 5 (wrongful communication of information) of the Official Secrets Act.

The case was registered three months after his book India’s External Intelligence: Secrets of RAW on alleged corruption in the RAW hit the stands.
