Rakhi Nandi, the 25-year-old wife of Rajiv Nandi who went to court seeking a direction to his wife not to go for abortion, today alleged that she had suffered a miscarriage on April 20 when he kicked her in the stomach. She was speaking to The Indian Express at her father’s home in Amodpur in Birbhum district of West Bengal.
Her husband, however, described the charge as ‘‘baseless’’, saying she neither wanted to live with him, nor have the baby. Rajiv, who is in Lucknow, said he had consulted a doctor who had said since she had conceived six weeks earlier, it was no longer safe to go for an abortion.
Accusing her husband of torture, Rakhi said she escaped from Lucknow with the help of a security guard of the housing complex where she stayed with her husband. A few neighbours had also helped her board a Howrah-bound train. She said she lodged a complaint against her husband with the Madion police on April 24.
Denying this sequence of events, Rajiv alleged she had been wanting to leave him ever since she returned from a family wedding in January 28. And, after she began showing ‘‘suicidal tendencies’’, he claimed, he himself called her parents who took her away.
Rakhi said theirs was an arranged marriage that took place on November 22 last year. Rakhi, the elder of two sisters, has done her MA in Political Science from Burdwan University. Her father, Narendra Nath Sen, is a businessman.
Rakhi has alleged that her husband was demanding money from her father for a flat, but Rajiv said he already owned a flat and it was a false accusation.
‘‘Rajiv wanted to be a father. He took me to a doctor, got a pregnancy test done and it was confirmed. But the torture for money became unbearable and acute for me,’’ said Rakhi. Asked if she didn’t wish to become a mother, she replied: ‘‘Which married woman doesn’t want to become a mother? It was because of his torture that the baby was destroyed.’’
Father Narendra Nath Sen asked: ‘‘What security would my daughter have if I send her back to Lucknow?’’ Rakhi, however, has not yet decided if she would ask for divorce. ‘‘First let me recover from my injury.’’
