NEW DELHI, May 25: The Delhi Cabinet today approved the scheme for giving pension at the doorstep for which Rs 18 crore has been allocated from the Delhi Government budget.

Providing details of the resolution today, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Poornima Sethi said, “We already have 68,000 people registered under the pension scheme and we expect 20,000 more to be registered by the end of the year.”

The first installment of the cheques would be distributed between the last week of June and first week of July.

The pension would be distributed by about 400 special messengers who will be paid Rs 15 per cheque, every four months. “Earlier the post offices used to distribute the cheques and were paid Rs 20 per cheque for the whole year. But the advantage of special messengers is that they would minimise the problems for senior citizens,” Sethi said.

Each MLA can sanction 300 people for pension under their discretionary quote and MPs sanction 100 people per year. “In a note to all the MLAs I have requested them to sanction at least 100 cases of those between the age of 60 to 65,” she said.
