A BSF jawan was killed and another seriously injured when their colleague reportedly opened fire after an altercation on Wednesday night in the Kesari Singh Pura sector in the border district of Sriganganagar.
Head Constable R.D. Shiri, posted at the fifth border post in the sector, was arrested on Thursday, after absconding from the unit.
‘‘The jawan was apprehended from a nearby village,’’ says BSF spokesperson Additional DIG D.V. Saraswat. ‘‘He has been taken to the battalion headquarters where he will be questioned. As of now, we are not very sure as to what triggered the incident. Since one of the victims died on the spot and the other was seriously injured, we were not able to piece together what happened. Now that the culprit has been arrested, we will get to the bottom of the incident.’’
The deceased was identified as Constable P.D. Verghese and the injured as Rameshwar Singh. Singh has been admitted to the district hospital in Sriganganagar. This has been the first such incident involving BSF jawans this year.
