Johnny Lever seeks discharge from case
Noted comedian Johnny Lever filed an application on Tuesday seeking discharge from a case filed against him by the Crime branch for allegedly insulting the national anthem at a party held at Dubai in 1989. In his application, Lever has stated that there is no material available on record to support the charges against him. The Crime Branch which had filed the FIR claimed it had a video recording of the function where Lever insulted the national flag .The hearing on the case has been adjourned to November 17.
Transporter held for evading Rs 3 cr excise duty
A Bhiwandi-based transporter was arrested by Central Excise authorities on Tuesday for evading excise duty to the tune of Rs 2.83 crore.
The accused Sajjankumar Kumta, director of SR Roadways, transported processed man-made fabrics and other types of cloth materials for Sona Processor, Thane and Salasar Processors, Bhiwandi. According to excise officials the two companies got the fabricscleared without paying basic and additional excise. Kumta was remanded to judicial custody by the Holiday magistrate VP Tavare till November 9.
Salary not paid, teachers meet VC
A delegation of degree college teachers met University of Mumbai Vice Chancellor protesting the non-payment of salaries for the strike period of hundreds of their colleagues. The Registrar of the University met the delegation assured that action would be taken soon.
Doc, family nabbed for harassment at Thane
A doctor and six of his family members, including his parents, were arrested by the Wagle Estate police in Thane recently on charges of harassing his wife. According to the wife8217;s complaint, Dr Murlidhar I Karande would harass and beat up his wife over petty matters, said the police. Karande faulted his wife for her looks and accused her of causing problems for his family ever since their marriage. The doctor8217;s parents, brothers and their wives also reportedly joined in the abuse.
